CRCT

I feel really good about the CRCT.  I am hoping that each of my students did well.  I am not sure when the results will be in.  As soon as I receive them, I will contact you.

If you have not gone on line at http://www.georgiaoas.org to take CRCT Practice Tests, please do so.  This will give you an idea of what to expect during the week of April 20th.  It is not everything that will be covered, but it does have some skills that will be on the test.  The more practice they have, more than likely they will not make simple mistakes on the test.

Math Strategy:

Every Monday we focus on word problems and different mathematical strategies.  We are currently using the IQ (information and question) Strategy when we are doing math word propblems.  They circle the important infomation and underline the question.  Then they use the information to solve the problem.  Please use this strategy when I send word problems home.  Below are some areas that we are reviewing as a math drill before our math lesson.

1. measurement of weeks ( 3 weeks = how many days?)

2. counting dollar bills and coins

3. subtracting 2 digit numbers without regrouping

4. number patterns

5.  time approximation ( 5:10 is closest to?  5:00 or 5:30 or 6:00)

6. addition and subtraction (making both sides equal)

   Ex:  15-8 =  7- ____        or     20 + 6 =  ____ + 12

3. There are 16 ice cream cones.  Braxton ate 8.  Jaszwan ate the rest.  Who

    has more?  Show your thinking.

 4. place value in word problems

    Ex:   Aiyana has

·

·

·

·

·

·

·

·

·

stickers.

Tayah has

·

·

·

·

·

·

·

stickers.

How many more  stickers does Tayah have than Aiyana?

The statewide CRCT Test will be held during the week the April 20th in the areas of reading, Language Arts, and math.  It will cover the following things.  Please use and review all material that has and will be coming home in order to make sure your child is prepared.

Vocabulary focuses on word meaning, synonyms, antonyms, compound words

Comprehension: answering questions about characters, setting, main idea, supporting details, context clues, inferring, cause and effect, making predictions, and sequencing

Grammar: capitalization, punctuation, nouns, proper nouns, adjectives, verbs, contractions, different kinds of writing (letters, poems, and stories)

Research: ABC order, dictionary skills, and Table of Contents

Phonics: vowel and consonant sounds, word ending, and missing sounds in words

Numbers and operations: place value (ones and tens), ordering numbers (skip counting), greater than, less than, equal to, expanded notation, ordinals, sequencing, sets, fractions, and number names

Geometry: plane figures (square, diamond, triangle, rhombus, oval, rectangle, circle, pentagon, hexagon) solid figures (cube, cylinder, cone, rectangular prism, sphere), geometric relationships (patterns and positions), symmetry, visualization (using shapes to make new shapes), and comparing shapes

Measurement: measuring objects length, money, and time

Algebra: addition and subtraction (in word problems, finding missing parts, and estimating

Data Analysis: reading and interpreting graphs and number patterns

Reading Tip:

1. Use the TAG Read Strategy :

T – trace the title

A - anticipate passage (predict)

G - go over questions (read all the questions and answer choices to yourselves)

R – read the passage

E – eliminate the wrong answers

A - answer questions

D - double check

(The “EAD” part is done together for each question individually).

2. Have your child read short and long passages/paragraphs independently and answer some questions about it. This will let you know if they understood what they read and prepared them for reading on the CRCT.  On the test they will have to read all passages to themselves.

3.  Have your child read daily to his/herself or to someone ( log books on Reading Sheet)

This Week's Spelling Words

Every Friday your child will be given a spelling test. Each week the words will be different, unless the majority of the class had a hard time spelling a word, then that word will be added to the following week's words. Starting this week all spelling words will come home on index cards tied on a piece of yarn for you to use as flash cards when you are studying the words with your child. All grades are recorded in my grade book, so please make sure that your child study the words daily for at least 5 minutes. Please focus on spelling the words and using them in a sentence. Below are the Spelling Words for the week of May 15, 2009. calendar found those what family beach park vacation summer pull
